The Edna
The Edna is the original name given to the apartments on the north side of the building at its birth in the late 1800's. At that time, Edna was one of the most popular names given to baby girls in America. Edna, originating in biblical Hebrew, means “pleasure, rejuvenation, delight,” which is an apt description of the view one has from the balcony of the Edna apartment. The Mingay
These apartments carry the name of James Mingay, a prominent resident of Saratoga Springs. Mingay fought in the Civil War and was a leading businessman in town; his apothecary site remains at the corner of Broadway and Lake Avenue. The charming house James Mingay built on 100 Lake Avenue is now a historic landmark. Perhaps it was his appreciation for fine architecture that prompted Mingay to purchase the Algonquin shortly after it was built.
